Brabin, Bernard  PhD

Leading researcher with 283 publications
I have many years research and teaching experience in maternal and child health in low income countries, which arose from my PhD work which first described the pattern of malaria in pregnancy in relation to maternal and perinatal outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa. The initial research work in 1981 provided a basis for the development of the World Health Organisation preventive strategy for control of malaria in pregnancy. I have conducted research on other pregnancy infections as they affect birth weight, preterm birth and child health outcomes in developing countries, and sought to better understand maternal and infant infection-nutrition interaction, such as the influence of host iron and folate status and maternal anemia. I was appointed to the Foundation Chair of International Child Health at the Academic Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam in 1998, while also holding a Chair in Tropical Paediatrics at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. I have supervised 18 PhD students at the University of Liverpool and supervised/promoted 22 PhD students at the Universities of Amsterdam and Leiden with projects in Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zambia, Papua New Guinea, and Burkina Faso. From 1990 to 2013 I was Course Director of the Master’s Degree Program in Tropical Child Health at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and convenor for teaching modules on International Child Health, Nutrition and Neonatal Health. In Amsterdam in 1999 I established the Certificate Course in Tropical Paediatrics for Dutch paediatric residents. The research on malaria in pregnancy continued with grants from the European Commission which funded clinical trials in Malawi and Burkina Faso and a European Consortium on malaria in pregnancy (PREMA-EU). A National Institutes of Health (USA) grant focussed on the effects of iron supplementation given periconceptionally on maternal and perinatal outcomes. My research has been recognized with appointments to World Health Organisation Advisory Committees and international Technical Working Groups on Nutrition, and by the National Institutes of Health Program initiative on Nutritional Biomarkers in infective and non-communicable disorders. I held an honorary consultant paediatrician appointment in community child health at the Royal Liverpool Children’s Hospital NHS Trust (until 2014), which facilitated community research on the prevention of childhood asthma, and environmental exposures during pregnancy including cigarette smoking and its effects on fetal outcomes. From October 2013 I retired from full-time appointments at the Universities of Liverpool and Amsterdam, and was awarded Emeritus Professorial status in Tropical Paediatrics at the University of Liverpool, and in International Child Health at the University of Amsterdam. My role as Principal Investigator of the NIH(USA) supported PALUFER iron supplementation trial continues through 2023. Since retirement my research on medical history has focussed on infection themes. show More
