FAQ
What is ONE Research Community?
The ONE Research Community is a network dedicated to connecting researchers and enhancing their career development. By providing resources, a broad spectrum of indicators and tools, we help researchers showcase their accomplishments and potential. Our ultimate goal is to empower researchers to reach further by making meaningful connections and leveraging insights that showcase their commitment and achievements.
Does ONE Research Community fit in the current context of research evaluation marked by initiatives such as COARA or the EU guidelines?
The ONE Research Community is designed with the principles of modern research evaluation in mind, aligning closely with initiatives such as COARA and the EU guidelines that advocate for responsible metrics and holistic evaluation frameworks. Our approach emphasizes a broad spectrum of indicators that measure not only traditional metrics like citations and publications but also factors like public engagement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the societal impact of research.
By integrating these diverse metrics, the ONE Research Community supports a more comprehensive and balanced evaluation of researchers' contributions. This approach mirrors the objectives of recent guidelines and coalitions, which seek to move beyond citation counts and impact factors to recognize a wider array of scholarly activities. Through our platform, we aim to foster an environment where all forms of academic achievements are valued, promoting a richer and more equitable research culture that is adaptable to the evolving demands of global research challenges.
What is the ONE Index?
The ONE Index is a comprehensive evaluation tool that aggregates a wide range of indicators into ten distinct dimensions, reflecting various aspects of academic and societal contributions. It uses a weighted system to assess researchers fairly, considering factors like discipline, publication impact, and years of activity.
How is the ONE Index calculated?
The ONE Index calculates scores using item-oriented and group-oriented indicators, which are then aggregated into dimensions. Scores are derived from percentile rankings within peer cohorts, defined by discipline and years of activity. The final score for each researcher is a weighted average of these dimensions, adjusted to ensure fair comparisons across different stages of academic careers.
How are authors compared in the ONE Index?
Authors are compared within cohorts that share similar academic disciplines and years of activity. This method ensures that assessments are contextually relevant and fair, highlighting researchers' performance relative to their direct peers. The system adapates to the different stages of researchers' careers, using narrower time windows for younger researchers and broader ones for more established academics.
What indicators are used in the ONE Index?
The ONE Index includes 70 indicators classified into ten dimensions like Impact & Excellence, Leadership, and Public Outreach. The full list is available here.
How can I contribute to improving the ONE Index?
We welcome contributions from the academic community to refine and enhance the ONE Index. Researchers, administrators, and other stakeholders are invited to share their insights and suggestions through our community forums and feedback channels. Your input is crucial in evolving our assessment tool to better serve the diverse needs of global researchers.
