Sheikh, Aziz  PhD

Leading researcher with 1932 publications
Sir Aziz Sheikh OBE, BSc, MBBS, MSc, MD, FRCGP, FRCP, FRCPE, FRSE, FFPH, FMedSci, FACMI, FFCI, IAQS is Professor of Primary Care Research & Development and Director of The University of Edinburgh’s Usher Institute. He is also Dean of Data for The University of Edinburgh. He read Physiology (BSc) and Medicine (MBBS) at University College London, Epidemiology (MSc) at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and obtained his MD from Imperial College London. He has substantive research interests in asthma/allergy, health inequalities and using health information technology to enhance the quality, safety and efficiency of health care. He has had over £150m in research grants, published over 1000 peer-reviewed publications and has been a Highly Cited Researcher since 2018. He is the inaugural director of the 17 university collaborative Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research, which is leveraging the UK’s extensive electronic infrastructure to transform the ways in which applied research is undertaken in the UK. He has served as GP Adviser to the British Medical Journal, Methodology Adviser to PLOS Medicine, Editor-in-Chief of NPJ Primary Care Respiratory Medicine and is currently Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Quality in Health Care (IJQHC). He held a Commonwealth Fund Harkness Health Policy and Practice Fellowship based in Boston MA, USA. He served on the UK Government’s Research Excellence Framework for Medicine (REF 2014 and 2021), and led the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH 2018) Forum on Data Science and AI in Healthcare, and Healthcare Resilience (2022). He has served as an adviser to the World Bank and is a member of the leadership team of WHO's Global Safety Challenge: Medication Without Harm. He was co-director of Harvard Medical School's Safety, Quality and Informatics Leadership (SQIL) Program. He was Visiting Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and holds visiting professorships with the Universities of Birmingham, Queen Mary’s University of London and Maastricht University. Aziz was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for 'Services to Medicine and Health Care' in 2014 and made a Knight Bachelor for 'Services to Covid-19 Research and Policy in 2022'. show More
