Mazzeo, D.  PhD

Researcher with 84 publications in the last 14 years
I am currently working as an Assistant Professor at the Politecnico di Milano (Milan, Italy). I was a postdoctoral Researcher, in the courses “Energy from Renewable Sources” and “Air-conditioning systems”, at the Department of Mechanical, Energy and Management Engineering at the University of Calabria (Unical) in the team of Prof. Giuseppe Oliveti at the Solar Energy Laboratory. I was involved in different national and international research projects and networks. With this networking, I have strengthened the impact of the University of Calabria and handled different international collaborations. I have ten years of experience in the following research topics: PV-wind hybrid systems, electric vehicles, energy efficiency in buildings, heat pumps, phase change materials, green roofs, air-conditioning systems, artificial neural networks, clean energy communities, green hydrogen, natural and mechanical ventilation of a solar greenhouse, renewable sources modelling, multi-objective simulation, heat transfer modelling, building simulation tools. Domenico’s research focuses primarily on the improvement of the energy efficiency of buildings by means of innovative materials, such as phase change materials and green roofs. Other important topics addressed are: (i) the study of PV-wind hybrid renewable energy systems to meet the electrical and thermal demand of buildings by means of heat pumps, to assist electric vehicles and to produce green hydrogen; (ii) the modelling of solar and wind sources; (iii) solar greenhouse modelling; (iv) building performance simulation tools. Lately, I am focusing my research on the application of artificial intelligence in the renewable system field. Investigations were addressed from different points of view, analytically, numerically and experimentally, as can be detected from my articles. I did my PhD thesis at the University of Calabria (title: “Dynamic thermal characteristics and energy behavior of building walls containing sensible storage materials and phase change materials (PCM). New analytical and numerical model and experimental validation”, supervised by Prof. Giuseppe Oliveti. I spent a research stay period at the GREA Innovacio Concurrent research group at the University of Lleida (Spain), where I worked in the laboratory to thermally test experimentally layers of phase change material (PCM) I have published more than 100 articles, most of which in high-impact journals. I obtained the Italian Qualification for Associate Professor in 2019, the PhD in Civil and Industrial Engineering in 2017 with a final mark optimum and the mention of merit by the Italian Thermotechnical Association (ATI) in the ATI 2018 award. I am the Supervisor of the three thesis winners of 3 AICARR 2020 AWARDS of the 4 awarded on a national scale by AiCARR (Italian Association of Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration), Italy. I was named as Top reviewer 2019 in Cross-Field by Web of Science. I supervised about 50 master thesis degrees and one PhD student. I am a member of AICARR (Italian Association Air Conditioning and Refrigeration), IBPSA-Italy (International Building Performance Simulation Association), ISES (International Solar Energy Society), IABP (International Association for Building Physics), Honorary associate member of ATI (Italian Thermotechnical Association). show More
