Stewart, Simon  PhD

Leading researcher with 895 publications
Professor Simon Stewart is a National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of Australia Senior Principal Research Fellow at the Institute of Health Research, University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA). Previously, he held senior academic positions at the world-renowned Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne (Head, Preventative Cardiology 2007-2014) and as Inaugural Director of the Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Services Research in Melbourne, Australia (2014-2017). Thereafter, he joined Torrens University Australia to conduct his NHMRC-funded research program, before consolidating this program with a senior leadership within the National Echo Database of Australia at UNDA (2022 – to date). For the past 20 years his twin focus of research has been to undertake large-scale population and community-based studies to understand an evolving burden of heart disease and, in response, to develop innovative models of care to improve related health outcomes. Beginning with his post-doctoral research at the University of Glasgow (via a prestigious Ralph Reader Fellowship) using data from Scottish linked data-set and the Renfrew Paisley Study, he published a series of reports highlighting the evolving morbidity and mortality associated with acute and chronic forms of heart disease. Thereafter, he was a Co-Principal Investigator of the Heart of Soweto Study in South Africa and also co-led the Heart of the Heart Study of Indigenous heart health in Central Australia. In helping to develop new, impactful health care services world-wide, he has also led a series of pragmatic trials involving thousands of patients and health professionals. This includes the WHICH? I & II Trials, the NIL-CHF Study, the SAFETY Trial and, more recently the RESILIENCE Trial. Collectively, they describe the potential benefits/pitfalls of nurse-led/coordinated disease management programs. Reflective of his translational impact, since completing his PhD in 1999, Professor Stewart has published 10 books and >450 peer-reviewed articles. During this period his published research (predominantly as first or senior author) has informed >200 Expert Guidelines/Position Statements from national and international professional bodies. His current Scopus h-index (driven by >22,000 citations mainly derived from original research) is 69, with an equivalent Google h-index of 85 (>36,000 citations). Previously, Professor Stewart was a Foundational Co-Editor of the European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Cardiology. He has also held senior editorial positions for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Nature Reviews Cardiology and Circulation: Cardiovascular Health Outcomes. During his career he has received numerous international research prizes (including the American Heart Association’s Kathrine Lembright Career Award). He has also been awarded prestigious fellowships from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), American Heart Association (AHA), Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ), American Academy of Nursing (FAAN) and the ESC’s Heart Failure Association (FHFA). He was also the Inaugural President (now Life Member) of the Australasian College of Cardiovascular Nursing. Overall, Professor Stewart has received continuous funding from the National Heart Foundation and NHMRC for the past 20 years. This includes >$20 million as the Principal Investigator (including concurrent Program Grants). In the same position he has been awarded close to $10 million in commercial funding for his research. Currently, in close collaboration with a network of international experts, Professor Stewart continues to lead innovative health surveillance projects from Australia (via the National Echocardiography Database of Australia with >1 million cases) and Africa (extending upon the MOZART Disease Surveillance Study of >7000 people across Mozambique). He also leads an international research show More
