Bleakley, Chris  PhD

Chris Bleakley (PhD BSc hons MCSP SRP) graduated from the University of Ulster in 2000. Between 2000 and 2004, he completed his Doctorate in acute soft tissue injury management (under the supervision of Professor Domhnall MacAuley and Professor Suzanne McDonough), and worked as a Physiotherapist at the Sports Institute of Northern Ireland (under the mentorship of Professor Philip Glasgow) managing elite and high performance athletes. Between 2005 and 2011, he worked in a split clinical/research post at the Faculty of Life and Health Sciences. Since June 2011, he has been working in an academic post at the Centre for Health and Rehabilitation Research, and most recently the Ulster Sports Academy, Sport and Exercise Sciences Research Institute (both Ulster University). He has produced over 90 research outputs including, 60 original research papers and 5 book chapters. He is the Course Director for the MSc Sport and Exercise Medicine, University of Ulster and is external examiner for MSc Sport and Exercise Medicine at Queen Mary, University of London. He has been part of the teaching Faculty at the Royal College of Surgeons, England since 2011 and the MSc in Sports Physiotherapy at Cardiff University since 2010. He completed a Cochrane Fellowship between 2008 and 2010. He has been involved in teaching Research Methods and Statistics at Undergraduate level since 2008 and at MSc level since 2011. He has acted as a statistical consultant for various external organizations, including the Police Service of Northern Ireland. He has delivered standalone CPD training courses at the Aspetar Sports Medicine Hospital in Doha and at Arsenal Football club. He has been a member of the International Advisory Board for Physical Therapy in Sport since 2011. He was lead researcher and guarantor for Physios in Sports UK Clinical Guidelines for Acute Soft Tissue Injury Management (published in 2010). He was Education and Research Officer for Physios in Sport UK between June 2012 and June 2014 and is a Committee Member of the International Ankle Consortium since October 2012. His research interests include: acute soft tissue injury management; ankle sprain prognosis and rehabilitation; cryotherapy and recovery; and monitoring injury risk factors. He is also interested in optimizing rehabilitation after lower limb injury and has recently developed an ankle sprain rehabilitation App (Re-App Ankle, available on Android).
