Prof. Lior Shapira is the Chairman of the Department of Periodontology and Vice Dean for Academic Affairs in the Hebrew University- Hadassah Faculty of Dental Medicine, Jerusalem. He is a full-professor of Periodontology since 2004. He is also serves as the “Betty and D. Walter Cohen Chair for Periodontal Research”. He is currently the President-Elect of the EFP. Education: Prof. Shapira graduated from the Dental Faculty at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem in 1986, and achieved his specialty in Periodontology in 1990. Following a 2 year fellowship in the Eastman Dental Center (University of Rochester, NY), he completed his PhD thesis on the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases in Jerusalem. Research: Prof. Shapira has a long tracking record in dental research, throughout his career. His research is focused on the mechanisms of inflammation during periodontal and peri-implant infections. He published over 120 scientific papers, as well as many reviews. The research efforts were invested in understanding the phenomenon and mechanisms that occur in inflammatory cells in response to periodontal pathogens (particularly Porphyromonas gingivalis) and their products, in the cellular and molecular levels. The investigations carried out in tissue culture models as well as animal models. Many MSc and 3 PhD students had graduated from his lab. Society Professional Activities : Prof. Shapira served as a board member of the Israeli Society of Periodontology and Osseointegration between the years 1998-2002, and was the President of the Israeli Society in 2001.
