Fornace, Albert  PhD

Professor at Georgetown University    us
Leading researcher with 487 publications
Albert J. Fornace Jr., professor of Oncology, Biochemistry, and Radiation Medicine holds the Molecular Cancer Research Chair at Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, and was previously Director of the John B. Little for the Radiation Sciences and Environmental Health at Harvard, and earlier led the Gene Response Section at NCI. He is an internationally recognized expert in stress-signaling mechanisms and is in the top 0.5% of cited authors in the life sciences (http://HighlyCited.com ). He has made a variety of seminal discoveries in the fields of cancer research, molecular biology, radiation biology, and toxicology with particular emphasis on the understanding of stress-signaling mechanisms in both normal and cancer cells. His laboratory along with his collaborators have had important roles in characterization of pathways involved in cell cycle checkpoint control, tumor suppression, and cancer causation. His group has pioneered the use of transcriptomics and more recently metabolomics approaches for stress signaling applications with relevance to molecular toxicology, oncology, and radiobiology; and has used these system biology approaches at Georgetown to study signal transduction and perturbations by injury and disease. In addition to more basic research on molecular pathways, his laboratory is also studying cellular stress responses on a broader level. By understanding genome-wide response to stresses like radiation, and other chemical toxins, an important goal is to develop human biomarkers for exposure and disease. He is the PI of the metabolomics component of a U19 NIAID-funded multi-institutional consortium to develop biomarkers for radiation exposure, as well as PI for a NASA Specialized Center of Research to assess the risk of gastrointestinal cancer by space radiation. In the case of metabolomics, Prof. Fornace is the founding director of the Waters Center of Innovation at Georgetown University, and now leads the newly formed Georgetown University Center for Metabolomic Studies. He has mentored many research fellows and students who have gone on to successful scientific careers (http://fornacelab.georgetown.edu/people). In the case of inventions with commercial applicability, he holds nine patents dealing with molecular targets relevant to cancer treatment, cancer risk assessment, toxicology, and immunotherapy. show More
