Bulló, Mònica  PhD

M Bulló is Professor from the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology at the University Rovira i Virgili. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Biology (University of Barcelona), the Master in Advanced Studies in Medicine and Surgery and the PhD in Nutrition and Human Health (Cum-Laude and Extraordinary Doctorate Award) (University Rovira i Virgili). She joined the Cell and Molecular Biology Unit at the Municipal Institute for Medical Research (IMIM) in Barcelona, the Center of Biomedical Research at the University Hospital Sant Joan in Reus and the Department of Medicine and Surgery at the URV as pre-doctoral researcher. After different grants and contracts as researcher and associate lecturer, she got a Senior Lecturer position in 2005, Reader position in 2016 and became Professor in 2021. Along her career, she was granted for a post-doc at the Neuroendocrine & Obesity Biology Unit-St John University Hospital-University of Liverpool and more recently as visitant lecturer at the Radboud University Medical Center. Bulló was co-leading the Human Nutrition Unit: Prevention and epigenetics at the Institute of Health Pere Virgili until 2020, is co-leading the Human Nutrition Unit at CIBERobn, and she currently leads the Nutrition and Metabolic Health research group. She is member of the Nutrition and Mental Health (2017 SGR 00766) and member of Tecnatox, a center of environmental, food and toxicological technology recognised as TECNIO. Bulló is also ascribed as senior researcher at the Institute of Health Pere Virgili (IISPV) and at the Institute of Neuroscience (University of Barcelona). Along her career, Bulló has acquired extensive experience in the design and execution of epidemiological and clinical studies in non-communicable diseases, coordinating laboratory tasks in multicentre studies including Predimed, Predimed-Plus and Satin. She has participate in a total of 38 national and international research projects (16 as PI) and 14 projects with industry. During these years, Bulló has developed advanced skills in nutritional epidemiology and clinical trials with important contributions in the interaction between nutrition, metabolomics, metagenomics and epigenetics to advance in the field of the personalised medicine for non-communicable diseases, obtaining several research awards. Due to her large experience in research and research’s management at national and international level, she participates in different Boards including the Spanish Society of Basic and Applied Nutrition (2009-2012), the Spanish Society for the Study of Obesity (2016-2020), the Catalan Nutrition Center (2012-2020), the Scientific Committee of the Pere Virgili Health Research Institute, the Expert Committee of the Network of Food Innovation of Catalonia (XIA), the International Board of Diabetes and Nutrition Study Group (European Association for the Study of Diabetes), and the International Carbohydrate Quality Consortium. Her international projection is also demonstrated by the participation as International Expert Evaluator in different research programs in Europe, US and Asia. Bulló has published more than 250 papers in high impact factor journals, with an h-index of 77 and more than 17.000 citations, occupying the 5th position (2nd woman) in the AD Scientific Index 2022 within researchers from the University Rovira i Virgili. Since 2002, Bulló has also been teaching in several graduate and post-graduate subjects, with different responsibilities in Degrees of Medicine, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Physiotherapy, scoring 0.6 points above the average of the URV student’s satisfaction levels in the last three academic courses.
