Panagiotidis, Michail  PhD

Researcher with 252 publications in the last 31 years
As of 2019, Mihalis holds the post of a Professor as well as Senior Scientist & Department Head of Cancer Genetics, Therapeutics & Ultrastructural Pathology at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology & Genetics. Prior to his current position, he has held academic posts in UK (Northumbria & Heriot Watt Universities; 2013-2019), Greece (University of Ioannina; 2012-2013) and USA (Universities of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Nevada-Reno; 2006-2011). Mihalis conducts multidisciplinary research in several areas of academic and industrial interests: A. Cancer therapeutics with an emphasis in understanding the genetic/epigenetic background in cancer pathophysiology, the development of experimental cancer therapeutics and the role of phytochemicals in clinically relevant adjuvant therapeutic strategies. To these ends, his research aims to determine the role of epigenetic modifications in altering apoptotic gene expression in ways compatible with the anticancer properties of various natural phytochemicals, novel synthetic small molecules and other experimental cancer therapeutic modalities (e.g., hyperthermia) in order to identify key apoptotic targets capable of mediating a therapeutic response. B. One Health Initiative with a focus on the effects of climate change, environmental contamination and disease emergence/re-emergence in global human health as well as the role of personalised nutrition in chronic disease prevention. C. Circular economy (e.g., waste recycling of organic material/bio-waste, etc.,) in the context of toxicity evaluation and assessment of health-promoting properties of novel, sustainable and eco-friendly biomolecules with the potential for the development of end user applications and/or niche consumer product formulations. D. Novel engineered materials for various biomedical applications (e.g., orthopaedic implants, drug delivery platforms, etc.,) in the context of evaluating their biocompatibility, potential toxicity and overall functional performance. Mihalis has been the recipient of a number of grants, from various funding agents, including the European Commission (Horizon 2020 Research & Innovation Action & Marie Curie Fellowship schemes), American Institute for Cancer Research & the World Cancer Research Fund and the Leverhulme Trust, among others. In addition, he has acted as a reviewer for a number of international funding agencies including the Hellenic Ministry of Education, Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation, EU-COST Action, British Council, Portuguese Foundation for Science & Technology, Kazakhstan National Centre of Science & Technology Evaluation, Wellcome Trust, French National Alliance for Life & Health Sciences, among others. Mihalis is a Scientific Advisory Board Member for the International Institute of Anticancer Research and also he has been a Marilyn Gentry Fellow of the American Institute for Cancer Research & World Cancer Research Fund. Moreover, he has acted as an ad hoc reviewer for more than 50 international peer-reviewed journals while he is on the Editorial Board of several journals that span across different scientific disciplines. Mihalis has been invited as a guest speaker in several international conferences as well as academic institutions globally. Finally, he has supervised a number of undergraduate (BSc), postgraduate (MSc) and PhD student projects into a successful delivery. show More
