É professor livre-docente de Literatura Brasileira no Departamento de Letras Clássicas e Vernáculas na Universidade de São Paulo, pesquisador do CNPq, editor da Machado de Assis em linha - revista eletrônica de estudos machadianos (Qualis A1) e pesquisador associado da Biblioteca Brasiliana Mindlin. Graduado em Comunicação Social (Jornalismo) pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, mestre e doutor em Teoria e História Literária pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas, tem pós-doutorados na University of Manchester (2007), Reino Unido, e na Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa (2015-2016), no Rio de Janeiro. Foi professor visitante na Universidade da Califórnia, em Los Angeles (UCLA). Atua principalmente nos seguintes temas: Machado de Assis, recepção crítica, adaptações de textos literários para cinema e televisão.
