I am Professor of Epidemiology and Evaluation at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Through my research and policy work at a leadership level in global health, I have made important contributions in relation to characterising the epidemiology of, and evaluating interventions to address, infectious diseases. I have led and contributed to research and evaluation studies in South Africa (where I was based 2000-2004), Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia and UK and have published more than 190 scientific articles and book chapters. My areas of research focus have been wide, including: the epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in school populations; the evaluation of structural and behavioural HIV prevention interventions; trends, forms and impacts of HIV and health stigma; the social epidemiology of HIV infection; and, adolescent health, family planning, tuberculosis control, school-based deworming, intimate partner violence and medical male circumcision. I have written articles on a range of methodological issues relevant to global health studies, including on: pragmatic trials, non-randomised evaluation designs, process evaluation, complex interventions, stepped-wedge trials, health inequalities, cascade frameworks, real-time evaluation, and transportability and generalisability of research findings. I am chair (2021- ) of the Evaluation Advisory Committee (EAC) for the Global Alliance on Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI), leading the oversight of Gavi’s organisational and programmatic evaluation activities on behalf of the GAVI board. I am a member of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Group (STAG) providing strategic advice to WHO’s Reproductive and Sexual Health Research Programme (2017-). During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was approached by the UK Department of Health and Social Care to act as co-chief investigator (2020-21) for the English COVID-19 Schools Infection Survey, in partnership with the UK Health Security Agency and the Office for National Statistics – a national-scale study with real-time policy influence through SAGE and its sub-groups. Early in the pandemic, I also convened an international group of >30 scientists to form the “Group for lessons from pandemic HIV prevention for the COVID-19 response”. I was the founding director (2011-2018) of the LSHTM Centre for Evaluation, a network of over 300 researchers dedicated to advancing a multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation of public health interventions. I chair the Trial Steering Committee for the ASSIST Global trial (2021-); am section editor (2016-) of the Implementation and Evaluation Research section of the journal of Health Policy and Planning (Impact Factor 2.7); chair the Steering Group of the Centre for Excellence in Development Impact and Learning (CEDIL) funded by UK FCDO (2017-); and, am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Finally, I co-chair the John Snow Society (2021-) which celebrates the life and works of Dr John Snow, the pioneer of epidemiological method and anaesthesiology, and hosts the annual Pumphandle Lecture at LSHTM, one of the most important public health lecture series globally
