Gualillo, Oreste  PhD

Senior researcher with 270 publications in the last 32 years
Dr. Oreste Gualillo graduated in pharmaceutical chemistry and technology at the School of Pharmacy of the University “Federico II” in Naples, Italy. Dr. Gualillo enrolled in the Ph.D. Program in Pharmacology of Natural Products. As a doctoral student at the Department of Experimental Pharmacology of University of Naples "Federico II", he conducted thesis research in the laboratory of Professor Raffaele Di Carlo earning a Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 1996. He received training in molecular endocrinology under the mentoring of Professor Paul A. Kelly at the Necker School of Medicine, INSERM U344, in Paris. In 1998, he moved to the Laboratory of Molecular Endocrinology of the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, where he was first visiting Professor in Physiology with Professor Carlos Dieguez and then a "Marie Curie" TMR30 Researcher with Professor Felipe F. Casanueva. In 2001, he set up his own research group at the Santiago University Clinical Hospital, Division of Rheumatology. He is currently a Staff Researcher of the SERGAS (Servizo Galego de Saude) into the Spanish National Health System, at Area Sanitaria de Santiago de Compostela e Barbanza, Santiago University Clinical Hospital, heading the Neuroendocrine Interactions in Rheumatology and Inflammatory Diseases (NEIRID) group of IDIS (Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Santiago). He worked on the regulation and signal transduction of prolactin, leptin and ghrelin under various pathophysiological conditions, in particular in immunity and inflammation. When started his own laboratory at the Santiago University Clinical Hospital, he turned his attention to the question of neuroendocrine interferences in rheumatic diseases. Dr. Gualillo’s primary research focussed on the molecular signals triggered by adipokines and on the pathways through which adipokines are involved in rheumatic diseases and in the inflammatory response of chondrocytes, synovial cells and adipocytes in particular in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Over the past years, his group has contributed to multiple aspects of research on the roles of adipokines in inflammation in rheumatic disorders and to define the molecular basis of ghrelin action in chondrocytes and cartilage. Dr. Gualillo’s group is also involved in research aimed to define the role of phenolic compounds of extra virgin olive oil in cartilage pathophysiology. Dr. Gualillo’s track record of professional achievement is backed up by more than 150 primary peer-reviewed publications (research papers, book chapters, editorials etc). His H index is currently 62 (source Google Scholar). He has on going collaborative research with industry and leading academic investigators in established centres of excellence. He serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals and committes as well as technical advisory bodies. show More
