Ahluwalia, Tarunveer Singh  PhD

Associate Professor at University of Copenhagen (KU)    dk
Senior researcher with 233 publications in the last 18 years
I am a senior researcher, Associate Professor (University of Copenhagen) with passion for research within chronic complex disorders: diabetes complications and asthma (genomics/metabolomics/proteomics). I am currently leading several projects from Steno Diabetes Center Copenhgen (SDCC)) locally involving my former work places, 1) the Danish Pediatric Asthma Center (COPSAC), 2) NNF Centre for Basic Metabolic Research, Univ. of Copenhagen, and 3) Lund University Diabetes Center, Malmo, Sweden. I also collaborate with multiple international consortia (CHARGE, GIANT, EAGLE, EGG, CKDGEN) and international labs. (in US, UK, Europe and India) working on genomics and metabolomics of metabolic traits, diabetes and its complications. My focus are is clinical genomics and Metabolomics and identification of biomarkers of disease prognosis, diagnosis and progression. This also includes omics data integration and involving machine learning non invasive methods through collaborations with specialists: Some projects include: • Metabolomics of Diabetes related neuropathy and foot complications • Genetics of severe childhood asthma -in collaboration with Harvard University Hospital and the Aarhus University iPsych project • Metabolomics and genetics of diabetes kidney disease – collaborating with key European consortia • Genomics of clinical biomarkers of cardiovascular and renal diseases After completing my M.Sc. in Biotechnology, and PhD. in “Functional Genetics of Diabetic Complications”, from the reputed PGIMER (Post Graduate Institute Medical Education & Research) in Punjab - India, I started my Post Doctoral Research career at the Lund University Diabetes Center (LUDC), Department of Clinical Sciences, Clinical Research Center (CRC), Malmo, Sweden in the group led by Professor Leif Groop with focus on “Genetic markers of Diabetic Nephropathy in Scania Diabetes Register”. Following this I moved on to the NovoNordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (NNF CBMR). Here I developed further through trainings, numerous international collaborations and being part of the team discovering genes modulating Vitamin B12 levels in Europeans. Soon after I lead a diabetes gene discovery publication where we discovered a novel Type 2 diabetes gene (CELSR2) using large meta data involving >17000 diabetes cases and >64000 controls from European ancestry. I also got a chance to mentor PhD students here. I was then offered the position of a senior researcher by Dansk Børn Astma Center in Gentofte Hospital (or COPSAC: Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood), in July 2014 and started to work on genetics of another complex chronic disease - Asthma. After getting to understand the disorder and representing COPSAC in numerous international, European and Danish projects, I am now finalizing my first lead project in severe childhood asthma. In this study we have identified novel genes, pathways and potential drug targets. In COPSAC I once again had the opportunity to mentor and also to work on the Danish Supercomputer for Life Sciences and Research “Computerome” at the DTU. In 2015 I also became a Consultant to NovoNordisk Steno Diabetes Center for Omics projects and then accepted their offer as a joint affiliate at the present SDCC (Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen). I conducted teaching workshops, gained experienced as an analyst (clinical trial data), a project manager and am now writing grants. With the humble achievements and work experience in academia and the clinic, I feel curious to find answers through translational research helping improve the prevention, treatment and finally the quality of life of patients. I hence would like to continue to share my knowledge, experience and technical expertise to benefit Clinical Research, academia and Industry in expanding our collective knowledge of these diseases, and their potential drug targets. show More
