Irvine, Alan  PhD

Leading researcher with 668 publications
Alan is a dermatologist in Children’s Health Ireland and St. James’s Hospital, Dublin & Professor in Dermatology, Trinity College Dublin. He trained in Dermatology and Genetics in Belfast and Great Ormond Street Hospital and was a Fulbright Scholar at Northwestern. His research spans basic mechanisms of disease to patient-focussed translational investigations and clinical trials and is directed towards improving the lives of people with both common and rare skin disorders. His research themes are epithelial genetics, characterisation of the skin barrier, disease mechanisms in, and advanced therapy of, atopic dermatitis. He has been a PI/Co-PI on > €25M in research funding. Alan has contributed > 300 papers, including 1st/Snr authorships in the Lancet, NEJM, Nature Genetics, and has given hundreds of invited lectures, including to NIH & Keystone workshops and Plenary Lectures at the major Dermatology (AAD, EADV, WCD) and Allergy (EAACI and AAAAI) Conferences. His discovery, with Irwin McLean, of the role of common filaggrin mutations in skin barrier function demonstrated the importance of the epithelial barrier in the pathogenesis of atopic and allergic diseases, which affect more than 1.5 billion people worldwide. This changed the direction of research in the field and provided scientific evidence for the epithelial barrier hypothesis of allergic disease. Alan’s leadership roles include: Founding Director (President Elect) of the International Eczema Council, Founding Chairperson/Director of NISR, a not-for-profit organisation providing registries of skin disease and Founding Director of the Irish Skin Foundation, the Irish support and advocacy organisation for patients with skin diseases. He is an advisor to several other skin disease charities. Within the Irish Health System his leadership and advocacy includes 2 years as President of the Irish Hospital Consultants Association, representing more than 95% of Irish Hospital and Mental Health Specialists. He was a co-author of the St James’s proposal for Ireland’s National Children's Hospital and the Smith Report on The Future of Genomic Medicine in Ireland. Alan has been elected to the Royal Irish Academy, the Academia Europaea, and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He is an Honorary Member of the Société Française de Dermatologie. His work has been recognised by international prizes including the Times Higher Education Research Project of the Year, the Paul Gerson Unna Prize (German Derm Soc) and prize/named Lectures: MB Sulzberger (AAD), Parkes-Weber (RCPLond), Watson-Smith (RCPEdin), Dolovich (AAAAI), ESDR Plenary Lecture (EADV), Hurwitz (SPD), Goltz, (U Minn), Honig (CHOP/U Penn). show More
