She received her Ph.D. degree from Peking University in 2005 and worked at Cardiff University in 2005 and 2006 as the holder of Post-doctoral Fellowship of The Royal Society, London. Then she worked as an Alexander von Humboldt research fellow at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe in Germany from 2006 to 2007. She joined Peking University in 2007, and was awarded as the Chang Jiang Chair Professor by Chinese Ministry of Education in 2014. Professor Duan served as the Associate Dean and Executive Dean, College of Engineering (June 2018 – December 2019), and Chair of Department of Mechanics and Engineering Science, College of Engineering, Peking University (2013-2018). Currently, she serves as the Associate Editor of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineer) Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, members of editorial boards of eight international journals including International Journal of Plasticity, Journal of Mechanics of Materials and Structures, etc. She also serves on several committees both in China and USA including the Standing Committee Members of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM) and Chinese Society of Composites, ASME Mechanical Department Heads/Chairs Executive Committee (MEDHEC, 2017 - 2019 Members at Large). Professor Duan’s expertise lies in the continuum mechanics, multiscale- multiphysics modeling and experimentally characterization of the thermos-mechanical and physical properties of the heterogeneous media with various microstructures under external stimuli (e.g., thermo-mechanical loading and irradiation, etc). The important research contributions are: Eshelby formalism and micromechanical framework for nanocomposites, theory of surface stress and wetting transition for complex solid surfaces, and mechanical behaviors of metallic materials with irradiation. She has more than 140 publications in peer-reviewed journals, including Nature Communications, Science Advances, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci., Phys. Rev. Lett., Advanced Mater., Adv. Appl. Mech., J. Mech. Phys. Solids, Phys. Rev. B, Acta Mater., Proc. Roy. Soc. A, etc. She has given more than 70 invited, keynote and plenary talks in IUTAM Symposia, Conferences, Universities and Research Institutes.
