Professor Murphy has been the SFI-funded MaREI Centre Director since 2015, guiding it to global impact in Energy, Climate and Marine. MaREI is a twelve University/Institute centre with 250 researchers and has accumulated €65M in research funding since 2013. He has led MaREI successfully through four international reviews and secured funding for MaREI phase II for the years 2019 - 2024. Professor Murphy is a world-leading circular economy, energy, and environmental systems researcher with c. 180 peer review journal papers in high-impact journals. His h-Index (59 Google Scholar) places him in the top cited scholars in bioeconomy, biomethane, and electrofuel research. Professor Murphy has supervised 35 postgraduates and currently has a team of 20 circular economy, energy and environmental systems researchers. He has a strong history of working with industry, securing c. €1M industry research cash. Professor Murphy represents Ireland at the International Energy Agency Bioenergy since 2007. Due to his world-leading scholarship Professor Murphy was elected by his international peers to lead the Biogas Task from 2016 till 2018. In this role he authored/edited 11 IEA Bioenergy reports, 13 case stories, chaired 6 Symposia and provided expert evidence to the IEA and the European Commission. He was re-elected unanimously by the 16 country delegates for a second trimester (2019 – 2021). Professor Murphy holds the chair in Civil Engineering, the 12th person to hold the post since 1849.
