Jordi Salas is Distinguish Professor of Nutrition and Bromatology and an ICREA-Academia researcher at the Rovira i Virgili University, Principal Investigator of the CIBER on Obesity and Nutrition Network of the Instituto Carlos III (CIBERobn), and member of the Catalan Government's Network of Experts of the Public Health Agency, which plays an important role in assessing dietary risks. It draws up scientific reports in this field, it defines research areas and coordinates the task of the groups of experts working in risk assessment. He is also director of the Catalan Centre for Nutrition of the Institute of Catalan Studies (CCNIEC), the main aim of which is to contribute to furthering basic and applied research in nutrition and improving the quality of information and the education of society in this field. He is a member of the Section of Biological Sciences of the Institute of Catalan Studies, a member of the Spanish Academy of Nutrition, a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia, and chairman of the World Forum for Nutrition Research and Dissemination, an international committee of experts under the auspices of the International Nut Council (INC) for the promotion and development of research into nuts and health. He is member of the International Carbohydrate Quality Consortium (ICQ) and Member of the Board of the Expert Panel of Diabetes and Nutrition Study Group (DSNG) of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Between 2010 and 2015 he became a member of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety (AESAN), which depends on the Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality. Also in this period he was elected president of FESNAD (Spanish Federation of Scientific Societies of Food, Nutrition and Dietetics). Past vice-President of the Pere Virgili Reserach Institute on Health Sciences (IISPV) in Reus. In last years, Dr. Salas-Salvadó’ expertise and research lines focused on human clinical trials evaluating the effect of diets and dietary compounds on obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. Since 2005, he is one of the leaders of the PREDIMED study, a landmark trial evaluating the effect of the Mediterranean Diet on the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. He is the Director and Chair of the Steering Committee of the PREDIMED-PLUS study, an ongoing multi-centre, randomised, primary prevention trial on 6,900 overweight or obese participants (age 55-75 years) with metabolic syndrome. The project aims to determine the effects on cardiovascular disease events and mortality, adiposity, cardiovascular risk factors and quality of life, of an intensive weight loss intervention based on a traditional hypocaloric Mediterranean Diet, physical activity promotion and behavioral support compared to a less intensive program using Mediterranean Diet (without energy restriction nor physical activity). Recruitment started in September 2013 and ended in November 2016. The final results will be available in 2024. With all these projects and collaborations, his group has also developed skills in precision medicine using different OMIC´s methodologies, especially metabolomics and metagenomics, which are now implementing in epidemiologic and clinical studies. Jordi Salas-Salvadó has published more than 750 articles in national and international journals, and he has been cited in more than 76,000 scientific articles. He has edited 10 books and has taken part in the writing of 47 more. He has presented more than 400 communications and he has spoken at national and international congresses and symposia. Has an H-Index of 126, and has been declared by Clarivate Analytics as "Highly Cited Researcher" in the years 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 as one of the most cited researchers in the world.
