His first research activity focused on organophosphate-induced delayed neuropathy and then jumped to biochemical characterization of paraoxonase (PON1) in human and rat materials. In the last 28 years he has led a research line to evaluate the effects of pesticides and other environmental contaminants (metals) on human health through biomarkers of early toxic response and genetic susceptibility associated with exposure to these compounds (gene-environment interaction). This has enabled Dr. Hernandez to collaborate with a multidisciplinary and inter-institutional research group conformed by toxicologists, epidemiologists, geneticists and biostatistics. Dr. Hernández authored 184 full length scientific articles published in peer-review journals, which have received so far over 7300 citations according to JCR (H-index 49) and over 11.000 citations (H-index 59) according to Google Scholar. He has been listed in the “World Ranking of Top 2% Scientists” in 2021 and 2022 databases created by experts at Stanford University, USA. He also co-authored 196 scientific contributions to national and international Congresses (58 of them as invited speaker). He has also written 59 book chapters in various toxicological textbooks (15 of them in international publishers). This scientific production was partially supported by 22 research projects funded from Public Spanish Research Agencies and the H2020 (HBM4EU and PARC). Dr. Hernández has also acted as reviewer for 32 scientific journals from the area of toxicology and environmental sciences. As external duties, since 2000 he has been a member of the Panel of Experts on Epidemiological Surveillance of Acute Intoxications by Pesticides and also member of the Panel of Risk Assessment since 2006; both belonging to the Andalusian Council of Health (Spain). In 2005 was temporal advisor for the World Health Organization (WHO) in relation to biomarkers in children. He has also provided technical consulting to the Brazilian Government (National Agency for Health Surveillance) in the re-evaluation process of some organophosphates pesticides. From 2008 to 2017 was appointed as Special Government Employee of the USA and acted as a consultant of the Scientific Advisory Panel of the Food Quality Protection Act to assist US- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the Evaluation of the Toxicity Profile of Chlorpyrifos. From 2012 to date is member of the Plant Protection Products (PPR) Panel of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Since 2018 Dr. Hernandez is Chair of the PPR Panel and a member of the EFSA's overarching Scientific Committee. show More
