Lambert, Estelle Victoria  PhD

Leading researcher with 522 publications
I am current Director of the accredited UCT Research Centre for Health through Physical Activity, Lifestyle and Sport. I am a National Research Foundation (NRF) B1-rated scientist and have been a Fellow of the University of Cape Town since 2009. I am an author/ co-author (including as nee’ Estelle Dover or Vicki Lambert) on over 350 peer-reviewed publications (H-index of 68, Scopus, April 2023). I have been on the Clarivate Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher list in 2020 (Cross-discipline), in 2021 and 2022 (Social Sciences). The majority of my co-authored publications in the last 5 years have been focused on physical activity, health, the nexus between the environment and physical activity, obesity and physical activity, diet and food security, community-based interventions, and citizen science, with a Global South and equity lens, and across the life course. My research includes work in areas of prevalence, burden of disease; underlying aetiology of health effects/benefits; correlates, determinants and ecological factors associated with PA and obesity across the life-course, and most recently, environmental and behaviour change interventions. I have been internationally recognized for my contributions in the fields of PA, obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in LMICs, resulting in my inclusion as an expert consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) on PA and health. In 2016, I served on a team tasked with developing the Global Action Plan for Physical Activity (GAPPA). specifically incorporating the PA agenda into the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In 2019, I was competitively selected by WHO to be part of the WHO 2020 Global PA Guidelines Development Group. I am currently serving on the WHO Guidelines Development Group for Management of Infants and Children at High Risk (excessive adiposity) and Children with Obesity for improved health, functioning and reduced disability: a primary health care approach”. As in-country principal investigator (PI) or co-PI, I have been responsible for raising more than ZAR11.7 million in research funding since 2012. For example, I served as in-country principal investigator for the 12-country International Study on Childhood Obesity, Lifestyle and the Environment (ISCOLE, 2009-2013). I have also served as in-country principal investigator for the NIH/NIDDK study Modeling the Epidemiologic Transition: Energy Expenditure, Obesity and Diabetes (R01DK080763-01A1) from 2009-2013, and subsequent study “Gut Microbiota, short chain fatty acids, and adiposity across the epidemiologic transition (NIH R01DK111848), as well as co-principal investigator for the METS-Sleep study: Sleep timing, gut microbiota and cardiometabolic risk across the Epidemiologic Transition (R01HL148271). These studies involve the recruitment and maintenance of a longitudinal cohort of individuals, living in profoundly disadvantaged circumstances, who suffer a disproportionate burden of obesity, inactivity, hypertension and diabetes, despite widespread food insecurity and a high rate of unemployment. Regionally, I was the co-founder and chair of the African Physical Activity Network, in 2007 until 2013, as part of the CDC-IUHPE International Course on Physical Activity and Public Health, the first in Africa. I funded the secretariate of the AFPAN network over this period. The network has developed substantial collaboration in the region, including work on validating and adapting the Neighbourhood Environmental Walkability Index for our region. I have led or co-led on the Healthy Active Kids South Africa Report Card in since 2007. In 2020, I led a group of more than 40 academics, from 9 African countries in developing 4 policy briefs, promoting physical activity during COVID-19 and beyond, which are currently being disseminated. I also coordinated the WHO Review on physical activity and HIV guidelines, which involved young academics from 4 African countries. More recently, I was the lead author on show More
