Aylin, Paul  PhD

Paul Aylin is Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health, based in the School of Public Health at Imperial College London. He is director of the Dr Foster Unit at Imperial. He trained in Public Health Medicine and spent three years at the Office for National Statistics before coming to Imperial in 1997. He became a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine in 2001 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh in 2015. Research He leads and manages a team of researchers as Principal Investigator on a £8.3m (to date) project investigating variations in quality and safety in healthcare delivery using big data. Other recent awards include as Principal Investigator on NIHR grants investigating the impact of a mortality surveillance system on UK hospitals and examining the association of surgical procedures during pregnancy with birth outcomes. He leads a research theme within the NIHR funded Patient Safety Translational Research Centre and a work stream within the NIHR funded Health Protection Research Unit for Healthcare Associated Infection and Antimicrobial Resistance. He leads the Information and Intelligence Theme within the NWL ARC. Past research has included; Use of integrated care datasets for real world evidence; outcomes by day of the week of admission and of surgical procedure; hospital mortality related to the junior doctor August changeover; patient pathways; an investigation into patient mortality at general practice level for the Shipman Inquiry; statistical consultant to the Bristol Royal Infirmary Inquiry into peri operative and post-operative deaths using Hospital Episode Statistics. Impact His research has led to real changes in how care is delivered in the NHS. His mortality analyses were partially responsible for the Health Care Commission investigation into Mid Staffordshire which led to subsequent NHS reforms arising from the Francis report, and he continues to provide monthly mortality alerts to the Care Quality Commission. His research has precipitated changes to medical training including a shadowing programme for new FY1 trainees and he has driven new clinical standards for seven-day services. Teaching and training Director of Postgraduate Teaching within the School of Public Health, responsible for ensuring quality and overseeing delivery of four Masters courses. Course co-director for the Global Master of Public Health, having led the development of a pioneering completely online Imperial Masters course with a current cohort of 200 students.
